Where to place it

Next to a sofa or armchair, a floor lamp becomes a reading light; in a corner, it provides indirect light and visually enlarges the space; and beside a console or in the bedroom, it creates a warm atmosphere without switching on the main light.

Height and type of light

For reading, the shade should sit slightly above the shoulder of the seated reader, around 140-160 cm. Arc lamps bring light to the centre of the living room, and uplighters wash the ceiling with soft light.

Materials

Mango wood and natural-fibre shades add a handcrafted touch; metal brings a contemporary or industrial look; and rope or woven columns add texture.
